HIKING

Duration: 4 hours, +300 -1200, Distance: 8 km

The route begins on a dirt road, descending until the locality of Matinho. Then, the path starts descending along the hillside towards the next village. Along the way, visitors gain a clear perception of the contrast between the North/Northeast and the South of the island. On one side, there’s the immense Ribeira Grande, the largest hydrographic basin in the country. At the starting point of the hike, there’s minimal human settlement. The population is primarily engaged in cattle raising, dry farming, and cheese production. However, at the endpoint, we encounter a dense population settlement, where the main activity is irrigated agriculture.
