HIKING

Duration: approximately 5-6 hours, +600 -600, Distance: 9 km

This hike begins in Cirio and ends in Ribeira das Patas. Initially, it ascends a fairly steep donkey path up to a plateau offering spectacular views of the Ribeira das Patas valley. The trail then continues, sometimes at dizzying heights, along the mountainside to a point where the landscape abruptly changes to bizarre rock formations made of water-storing pumice stone. This striking location indicates that you’re approaching the great plateau, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of Tope de Coroa, the highest mountain in Santo Antão. On the plateau, the landscape transforms again into wide and fragrant grasslands, providing a perfect setting for a longer rest break before descending to the famous serpentines of Bordeira de Norte. This hike is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and diverse trails in Santo Antão, but it’s worth noting that you should be comfortable with heights.
