Itinerary
DAY 1: ISLAND OF SÃO VICENTE – ISLAND OF SANTO ANTÃO: CHA DE MORTE TO ALTO MIRA
Duration: 2-3 hours +620 – 400 5 km
Transfer: 1-hour boat ride + 35 minutes to the starting point and 1 hour from the ending point to the accommodation. Departure by ferry to Porto Novo, in the south of the island of Santo Antão. Transfer through lava and slag fields to reach Ribeira das Patas.
We hike on the southwest foothills of Santo Antão, landscapes torn by the canyon of Ribeira das Patas, and ascend towards the ridges dominated by basaltic needles resembling titans. The path winds between green oases and dykes, impressive lava walls that can reach several meters high. Descend into the agricultural valley of Alto Mira. Overnight in Porto Novo.
DAY 2: CIRCULAR WALK ON THE RIDGE
Duration: 5 hours +640 -620 10 km
1 hour drive will take us to the start of our beautiful walk at Agua das Caldeiras. This circular walk in the mountains has it all, spectacular views, ridge walking in parts, and goes through the main pine forests of the island. Being the greenest part of the island means that if there are clouds, this place will have them. Locals take advantage of this moisture to grow corn and beans so it’s a great opportunity to see people and have a chat with those cultivating their land or feeding their animals.
Overnight in ribeira Grande Valley.
DAY 3:THE FOUR THREE VALLEYS: CAIBROS-CHÃ DAS PEDRAS, AND JOÃO AFONSO
Duration : 4 hours +650 -750.
Hiking in the rich valleys of Ribeira Grande dominated by majestic peaks . Thatched cottages, terraced crops and gorges punctuate our walk. The track climbs into the sugar cane terraces to reach a pass overlooking two valleys and their sharp peaks. Then we descend to the hamlet of Ribeirao with its irrigated gardens and its terraced crops of sugar cane, and sweet potatoes,tomatoes.The last place to be visited is joao afonso.
Overnight in Ribeira Grande valley.
DAY 4: COASTAL HIKING AND HIDDEN VILLAGES
Duration 6 hours +550 -550 15 km
Transfer: 1h20
A nice transfer through the Garca valley takes us to the fishing village of Cruzinha. We take the small paved road, in ledge, and cross two villages “at the end of the world”, Formiguinhas and Corvo, then Fontainhas, all in color and on terraces. Continue along the path, carved out of basalt and ash, overlooking the ocean. Arrival at Ponta do Sol, the island’s flourishing old port where you overnight.
DAY 5 : LUXURIOUS PAUL VALLEY – SÃO VICENTE ISLAND
Duration : 5 hours +650 -450 10 km
Transfer: 1 hour to the starting point and 1 hour to the harbour after finishing the hike
By the coastal road, transfer to the peaceful village of cabo de ribeira passing first by pombas city by the sea and at the entrance to the lush Ribeira de Paul. During our hike we find Bananas, sugar canes, yams and bread fruit trees nestle on the terraces and offer a glimpse of rural and village life. The beautifully arranged thatched houses, the rustling of the water .At the end of the hike you can have the chance to try grog.
Transfer to Porto Novo and boat to Mindelo. The cultural capital, on your return from Santo Antão, will appear bubbling and exotic!
